Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM)
Precision electrical discharge processes for complex geometries, tight tolerances, and challenging material conditions.
PMI’s Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) capability provides precision material removal for parts with complex features, difficult-to-access geometries, or tight tolerance requirements that may be impractical with conventional machining alone.
Common Applications
- Complex cavity features requiring internal shapes or undercuts that are difficult to machine conventionally.
- Profile cutting and contoured slots in precision components.
- Fine detail and tight tolerance geometries where mechanical cutting would struggle to maintain form.
- Hard or heat-treated materials where maintaining integrity and minimizing mechanical stress are essential.
- Supporting multi-operation parts in aerospace, medical, and industrial markets where other machining processes are also applied.
Technical Range
PMI’s EDM capability supports precision cutting of conductive materials using controlled electrical discharge to achieve complex shapes and fine detail, including:
- Wire EDM cutting for precision contouring, profiles, and intricate internal geometries
- Sharp internal corners and narrow features not achievable with traditional cutting tools
- High-accuracy dimensional control, with tolerances held as close as ±0.0001”
- Burr-free finishes that reduce or eliminate secondary finishing operations
- Minimal mechanical stress on parts due to non-contact material removal
- Compatibility with electrically conductive materials, including hardened steels and exotic alloys

OnSite Equipment
PMI’s EDM operations are supported by dedicated EDM cutting systems and associated workholding designed for precision and repeatability, including:
- Wire EDM machines configured for high-accuracy contour and profile cutting
- Precision fixturing and workholding systems to maintain part stability during EDM operations
- Integrated inspection and measurement resources to verify dimensional accuracy and feature integrity
